Free KDP ISBN vsYour Own ISBN

KDP's free ISBN costs nothing but only works on Amazon and lists “Independently published” as your publisher. Buying your own ISBN costs $125 for one or $295 for ten, and lets you publish anywhere under your own name or imprint. Here's how to choose, and how many you actually need.

The Short Answer

Use the free KDP ISBN only if your print book will be sold on Amazon alone. Buy your own ISBN from Bowker if you want your name or imprint shown as publisher, plan to use IngramSpark, bookstores, or libraries, or are publishing more than one book. Each print format needs its own ISBN; Kindle eBooks don't require one.

Using Your Own ISBN

How to Set Up Your Own Imprint

  1. Choose an imprint name

Your imprint is the publisher name readers and retailers see. It can be your own name or a brand name. Check that it isn’t already used by another publisher.

  2. Buy ISBNs from Bowker

In the US, Bowker (MyIdentifiers) is the official ISBN agency. Buy a block that covers all your formats and future books.

  3. Register the book’s details

Assign one ISBN per format and enter the title, author, and imprint in your Bowker account.

  4. Match the details exactly in KDP

KDP checks your imprint against the ISBN agency record. The title, author name, and publisher must match exactly; even capitalization or a trailing space can cause an error that blocks publishing.

  5. Use the same ISBN on IngramSpark

For the same edition, upload to IngramSpark with the same ISBN and metadata so your book appears consistently across retailers.

Avoid These

Common ISBN Mistakes

Reusing one ISBN across formats

Paperback and hardcover each need their own ISBN.

Buying ISBNs from resellers

Some resellers list themselves as publisher of record. In the US, buy directly from Bowker.

Letting a company own your ISBN

If a publishing service registers ISBNs in its name, it becomes your publisher of record.

Metadata mismatches

Small differences between Bowker and KDP records block publishing. Copy details exactly.

Buying one at a time

One ISBN costs $125; ten cost $295. If you’ll need three or more, the 10-pack is cheaper.

Confusing ISBN with copyright

An ISBN identifies an edition. It doesn’t register or protect your copyright.
