How Amazon Ads Work for Authors

Amazon Ads let KDP authors promote books in Amazon search results and on other books' product pages. Sponsored Products are pay-per-click: you set a budget and bids, and pay only when a shopper clicks. Sponsored Brands showcase several books or a video and require a pen name with at least three titles in Author Central. Ads are profitable when your ACOS (ad spend Γ· ad sales) stays below your break-even point.

Amazon Ads Questions

They can, when the book is ready to convert: a genre-appropriate cover, a strong description, some reviews, and a competitive price. Ads send shoppers to your book page; if that page doesn’t persuade them, ads only increase spend. Results depend on genre, price, and royalty per sale.

KDP authors can run Sponsored Products, which appear in search results and on product pages, and Sponsored Brands, which showcase several of your books or a video. Sponsored Brands requires a pen name with at least three unique titles in Author Central.

Sponsored Products use cost-per-click pricing: you set a daily budget and bids, and pay only when someone clicks. Many authors start with a small daily budget while testing, then scale campaigns that sell profitably.

A good ACOS is one below your break-even point, which equals your royalty per sale divided by the list price. For example, a $15 paperback earning $4.00 per copy breaks even at about 27% ACOS. Ebooks with higher royalty percentages can afford a higher ACOS.

Ads reports show estimated KENP pages read attributed to your Sponsored Products campaigns separately, but ad sales figures don’t include Kindle Unlimited reads. That means ACOS can look worse than your true return for books enrolled in KDP Select.

Expect an initial testing period of several weeks to gather enough click and sales data before optimizing. Decisions made on a few days of data are often misleading, especially for books with low daily sales.

Usually it’s better to get some reviews first, because shoppers compare your book with competitors that have many. Small, tightly targeted campaigns can still help a new release gain visibility.

No. No honest ads manager can guarantee sales. We set targets based on your break-even ACOS, test methodically, and report results transparently every month.
