How KDP Royalties Work

On Amazon.com, KDP pays 60% of the list price minus printing cost for paperbacks priced at $9.99 or more, and 50% below that. Kindle eBooks earn 70% minus a delivery fee when priced between $2.99 and $12.99, or 35% otherwise. Example from KDP: a $15 paperback with a $5.00 printing cost earns $4.00 per copy.

PRICING TIPS

How to Price for Better Royalties

Avoid $9.00–$9.98 paperbacks

Below $9.99 the royalty drops from 60% to 50%. Moving a $9.49 book to $9.99 can noticeably increase your per-copy earnings.

Use the wider Kindle 70% band

The 70% option now covers $2.99–$12.99, giving nonfiction and longer books more pricing room.

Keep eBook files lean

At 70%, delivery costs $0.15 per MB. Compress images, especially in illustrated or photo-heavy books.

Watch trim size

Large trims cost more per page. A regular trim can raise your royalty on long books.

Choose color carefully

Premium color is far more expensive per page. Standard color can work for books with 72+ pages.

Price to genre norms

Higher royalties don't help if the price is far above comparable books. Check bestsellers in your category.
